The ultra-secret government department known as Sector Three has been assigned an impossible mission. Its success would bring vital information to those who work in the shadow-world of espionage, but the chances that the operative would survive are close to zero. Who but a madman would give such an operation any consideration? Only, perhaps, an agent who knows his life expectancy to be short - a man who fate has already sentenced to death.

The adventures continue. Seven more cases from the files of The Great Detective.

In Pursuit of the Dead

Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson journey to the Lake District at the bidding of Squire Foley, who claims to be tormented by a man he believes he has killed in a duel.
So begins a sequence of events that culminates with the confronting of, as Holmes remarked, 'the most evil woman that I will encounter.'

The Demon of the Dusk

Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson are summoned to Theobald Grange, the Warwickshire home of Lady Heminworth. Being of a nervous and superstitious disposition, her Ladyship lives in fear. Her husband and elder son were recently murdered, apparently by the ghost of a court jester who was executed on the site centuries before. The apparition has warned that she, too, is to die. Holmes rejects a supernatural explanation, although his adversary seems unaffected by gunfire and is able to take flight and disappear. The Great Detective brings his powers to bear, but still the killings continue...

The One Hundred per Cent Society

Sherlock Holmes agrees to take the case of Mr Avery Quill, whose daughter has mysteriously disappeared. A short time later the girl's body is discovered, accompanied by a visiting card bearing the head of the mythological Gorgon. No sooner have Holmes and Watson begun their investigation, than Mr Quill is also killed in the same brutal fashion, and an identical card found nearby.
Holmes follows the clues - and is warned that he is to be the next victim! The Baker Street Irregulars find the premises of a club for disinherited nobles, known as 'The One Hundred per Cent Society' which uses the Gorgon symbol, but this appears to have no connection to the murders. The following day Holmes is visited by one of the Society's members, who feels obliged to warn him that he and Watson are next on the murderer's list!
Holmes continues his enquiries, despite a first attempt on his life. The trail goes cold but he refuses to close the file on one of the most sadistic and ruthless criminals that he has ever encountered.

The Secret Assassin

The body lying on its back before us was unquestionably that of the man who had attempted to kill Holmes and I with explosives, at Glenbury Gardens. He wore the same adark clothing, although his hat was gone, and the hare lip was a livid scar on his pallid face. Strangely, it crossed my mind that what could be seen of his expression in death was softer than that he had worn in life.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        ***********************************************************************
Sherlock Holmes is not particularly surprised when Mrs Foulkes seeks his help to escape her impending murder, for he has had clients in that situation before. But when she explains that she has arranged her own death, the case takes on the unusual features that attract the Great Detective instantly.
